Christopher Ryan (co-author of Sex at Dawn, author of Civilized to Death, and host of Tangentially Speaking) returns to the podcast to discuss spirituality, and the ways we’ve engaged in this realm in different, yet parallel ways. We speak about psychedelics, astrology, synchronicity, and magic, and how these tools and practices have informed our approach to life. We touch on integration, ego, and humility, plus discuss the conflict between scientific worldviews/mechanistic thinking and the exploration of subjective meaning and belief. Plus, I talk about my inspiration for The Lunar Circle and why I approach and teach astrology in such a nuanced and experiential way.
Hi Anya, I listened to this podcast and heard your take on Astrology. It sounds very similar to the enneagram. I'm unsure if you are familiar with it, but there are 9 different types, and each type has a wing.
Similar to astrology, I think people can get too caught up with trying to "peg" each other as a particular type, to try to gain some final 'certainty' about things, rather than use it as a tool to help build understanding and empathy between one another (the proper way to use it in my view).
Anyway, I appreciate what you do and I look forward to seeing what you put out next.
Thanks Sam! Yes, I think in some ways Enneagram is similar to astrology, and often both systems can communicate similar things (in different ways) about a person's nature. I think one of the major differences is that Astrology has unlimited "types". Because everyone has *all* the planets in their chart, not just the sun, and because all those placements communicate with each other in different ways.... it leaves each personal with a totally unique and independent blueprint, which ultimately I think is more "accurate" than organizing people into 9 boxes.
That said... in my experience, all tools that help us learn about ourselves and about our complexities in honest ways is a win!
